Don’t you remember, a long time ago, when it was likely to feel like you were trying to keep your home clean and getting away from all of the pollution on earth just by staying inside your house and keeping the doors and windows closed? In your house, the control over the air quality belongs to you. Or does it really? The simple fact is that there are all sorts of pollutants that can infect the air of your home and increase your risk of respiratory problems and asthma. Part of this is because our households are becoming more air tight as we have better windows and seals in an attempt to lower heating and cooling costs. Sadly, those power personal savings are raising the pollutants in the air of our home. Here are some of the steps you can take to keep the air at your residence as healthy as possible.

Leave Dirt OUT!

If you are able, leave your shoes outside your house. If that isn’t doable, leave them within your home’s entry way and try not to ever wear or take them further into your home unless you have to. When you go walking around out of your house–even in indoor places like hospitals and shopping centers, your boots and shoes pick tons of things up. The soles of your shoes get coated in mildew, chemicals, bacteria, grime and dust. When you enter your own home with your shoes and boots on, you bring in these things and it gets into the floors and carpets. Whenever there is activity in your home, it gets kicked back up once again. Instead of staying in the flooring surfaces it goes back up into the air flow and you increase your likelihood of breathing it in. This possibility gets reduced considerably when you leave your shoes and boots outside or in the entry way of the house.

Don’t pick up your dry cleaning right away. Let it be at the cleaner’s for a few days. The chemical compounds employed by most dry cleaners are awful for humans. The chemicals, according to the EPA, are already linked to brain challenges and cancer. You must make sure that the clothes are completely dry before you take them home. If the clothing hasn’t yet dried all the way, you run the risk of both inhaling those chemicals and transmitting them onto your skin. Any broken skin would thus lead to those chemicals entering your body to some extent. You may possibly also try to find a dry cleaner that uses non harmful and environmentally cleaning methods.

Home Ventilation

Make sure you ventilate your home! Yes, it’s true that you put in those double paned windows since you wanted to keep the household at your ideal temperature. But when you leave those windows closed all day and night, you’re increasing your risk of breathing in the stuff you kick up as you walk around. The airborne debris that get stirred if you dust and vacuum are still there. The smoke and fumes from cooking and frying stuff on your stove and in your oven-float around the house for you to breathe in. The steam from your shower can seep into your walls creating mold to form which can then get breathed in and do serious damage to your health. Switch on the fans. Keep your house windows open. Give all the dust and other stuff a chance to get outside.

There are a large amount of ways to make the home healthier. Remember, coming home to your clean house doesn’t mean that the literal challenges of the world get shut out. Do some things to keep your house air pollution free.
