It is not as simple as it looks, but one project that pretty much anyone can do on their house is painting. If your household has not been painted in a while, you know that a painting project is often a challenge. If you complete proper prep work and you make the time, you will be able to save some money doing it yourself. If you don’t have the time, but you have the money, you can hire someone to do it.
Scraping off Paint
After years, the paint on your wall is going to either start to fade or peel. In fact, your best option is to scrape the paint off your wall. If your house is really old, it’s possible you have several coats of paint, which will compound the problem. It usually is a lot more laborious if the layer of paint below was oil-based. After you happen to be done scraping the paint off the walls, you’ll either need to putty holes in the wall if it’s wood or spackle if it is drywall then sand it down. When you are done, then simply remove the dust and give it a chance to completely dry. You may want to let it remain for 24 hours before you start painting.
Dealing With Moisture Build-up
Among the even bigger issues with older homes is moisture build-up. You may find paint cracks if your home contains excessive condensation or leaks. You will see this typically in the bathroom, where mold and mildew will also grow. While this is normally a bathroom issue, it could happen in other parts of the house. Sometimes your house will have a leak, or shrubs that are too close. When you have cracking paint due to too much moisture, then you need to think about a different solution. If it’s inside of the home, you will need to make a solution that is one part bleach and three parts water to remove the paint and kill the mildew. Should it be on the external part of the house, you just wash it with a pressure washer and the solution that comes with it.
Whenever the paint on your residence is starting to fade, that is also a good time to repaint. It can happen inside, but it is basically caused when exposed to the hot sun. To prevent this problem, steer clear of bright colors, or bold ones, such as red. If you’d like colors that get noticed, try ones that are generally golden or with a ruddy tone.
To help keep your house looking nice, you must never let it get into that bad of shape. You need to make the effort to repaint every few years and fix any leaks the moment they happen.
